The events sector: recovery in 2021
The events sector was paralysed by the health crisis. But how is the sector faring after a one and a half year hiatus?
In reality, the events sector has regained a sustained activity since the reopening of professional events and exhibitons. Indeed, many of the events planned for 2021 have been postponed to early September. But a problem is arising: the lack of staff. The difficulty lies in recruitment, as some employees have chosen to leave their jobs for a better quality of life. They often worked nights and weekends.
Unfortunately, this lack of personnel sometimes leads to the cancellation of services. These uncertainties therefore lead to a price war, between clients who want discounts, employees who would like to be paid more for their workload and the high cost of margins and raw materials.
For GL Events, based in Lyon and active in 25 countries, the first nine months of 2021 saw a 48.5% drop in activity compared to 2019. However, following the postponement of certain events, the month of September is proving to be historic. The group anticipates 500 to 530 million euros of turnover in the second half of the year out of the 700 to 730 million euros expected in 2021.
